The Call of the Wretched Sea is a monumental debut that establishes Ahab's signature brand of nautical funeral doom, transforming Herman Melville's literary masterpiece Moby-Dick into an oppressive and atmospheric musical journey. Built around glacial tempos, enormously downtuned guitar riffs, cavernous growls and haunting melodic passages, the album captures the vastness and unforgiving nature of the ocean. The songwriting alternates between crushing, doom-laden passages and melancholic atmospheric sections, creating a constant sense of isolation, despair and impending destruction. Tracks like "Below the Sun," "The Pacific" and "The Sermon" demonstrate the band's ability to balance overwhelming heaviness with beautiful, mournful melodies and immersive soundscapes. Dark, majestic and suffocatingly heavy, this is an essential funeral doom release that perfectly captures the obsession, madness and terrifying power of the sea.
