The Boats of the Glen Carrig sees German funeral doom pioneers Ahab exploring a more progressive, adventurous and atmospheric direction while retaining their signature nautical heaviness. Inspired by William Hope Hodgson's 1907 maritime horror novel, the album tells a tale of shipwreck, survival and encounters with mysterious, terrifying creatures in an unforgiving ocean. Enormous downtuned guitar riffs, glacial rhythms, cavernous growls and haunting clean vocals are complemented by melodic guitar passages, atmospheric keyboards and occasional bursts of aggressive death metal. Tracks such as "The Isle," "Like Red Foam (The Great Storm)" and "The Weedmen" showcase the band's ability to balance crushing funeral doom with expansive progressive arrangements and cinematic soundscapes. A beautifully bleak and immersive release that demonstrates Ahab's growing musical sophistication without sacrificing the overwhelming heaviness and melancholy that define their sound.
